Sweetfuel Project Methodology Breeding for drought
The general objective of this WP is to develop new lines or hybrids of sweet sorghum with
1. Identify promising sweet sorghum hybrids through multilocation testing
2. Screen sorghum core germplasm and reference collections for high and juice volume
3. Develop sweet sorghum hybrid parents for high grain and sugar yields for rainy and post rainy season adaptations
4. Develop high biomass and sugar yielding brown midrib (bmr ) hybrid parents
5. Develop stay green hybrid parents with drought tolerance
6. Demonstrate the economic advantages with sweet sorghum under rainfed situation
Task 2.1. Identification of promising sweet sorghum hybrids
Task 2.2. Screening of sorghum core germplasm accessions and reference collections
Task 2.3. Development of promising hybrid parents for high sugar and grain yields
Task 2.4. High biomass yielding brown midrib (bmr ) hybrid parents
Task 2.5. Stay-green hybrid parents with drought tolerance
